Caitlin Clark called for Indiana Fever teammate Kelsey Mitchell to be named WNBA MVP as the reigning Rookie of the Year’s injury woes go on.
The three-time All-Star went off for a career-high 38 points and added six assists and two steals as the Fever (19-16) came from 21 points down to defeat the lowly Sun (6-27) 99-93 in overtime.
The victory, which is the largest come-from-behind win in franchise history, came hours after Fever head coach Stephanie White issued an update on Clark’s chances of playing again this season.
Clark, who was the preseason favorite to win the MVP before her chances were wrecked by injury, made her feelings on the race for the accolade clear with a social media post in the immediate aftermath of the win.
“MVP Kels,” the 23-year-old wrote, and some of her teammates joined in by heaping adulation on Mitchell.
Sophie Cunningham wrote: “KELSEY FREAKIN MITCHELL,” and Sydney Colson added: “Kelsey Mitchell isn’t real.”
Mitchell is tied for third in the points-per-game ranks alongside Los Angeles Sparks star Kelsey Mitchell.
They average 20.4 points a night, with only Napheesa Collier (23.5) and A’ja Wilson (22.6) bettering them.
Mitchell recorded her fourth 30-point game of the season on Sunday, and her influence on the team has been immense in Clark’s absence.
The Ohio State alum has scored 20 or more points in 20 of her 35 games this year.
Mitchell’s stat line was all the more impressive considering she struggled from the floor in the first half before exploding for 34 points in the final 20 minutes to ensure the Fever escaped a humiliating defeat against the league’s worst team.
“Speechless, really,” head coach White said of Mitchell’s performance. “She was 0-for-7 in the first half with four points, and she just put us on her back.
She made big shot after big shot, big play after big play. She didn’t settle, she stayed aggressive and she willed us.”
Aliyah Boston joined her Fever teammates in calling for Mitchell to be named MVP. She told reporters: “I don’t think there are any words [to describe her performance].
“You look at Kelsey’s play and what she means to this squad, coming out and going off in that second half the way she did, it speaks for her [MVP] case in general.
Clark has missed the Fever’s past 13 games due to a groin injury, but Mitchell has come to the fore in her absence, and the 29-year-old played a heroic role in Indiana’s stunning comeback victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.
