A major star from CBS News has abruptly quit their job at the network with no explanation, as new bosses continue to promise major shakeups at the legacy network

A CBS News star quits after major shakeups at the organization

A major CBS News star has quit just nine months after starting their role, as the new bosses threaten to clean house at the network following backlash over edited chats with Trump administration officials and other controversial moments.

CBS Evening News anchor John Dickerson has quit his role on the show without explanation for his departure, which he announced on social media less than a year after he stepped into the role alongside co-anchor Maurice DuBois.

The news of his departure comes as there have been warnings more CBS stars could face cancellation after the network was looking to overhaul its programming, starting with the axing of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

In his post explaining his exit, Dickerson didn’t offer a reason for his departure, nor did he mention a new job in the works.

“Local news: At the end of this year, I will leave CBS sixteen yeard after I sat in as Face the Nation anchor for the first time,” he wrote.

“I am extremely grateful for all that CBS have me–the work, the audience’s attention and the honor of being a part of the network’s history–and I am grateful for my dear colleagues who’ve made me a better journalist and a better human. I will miss you.”

John Dickerson has abruptly quit his role at CBS News

Dickerson originally joined CBS News in 2009, and stepped into his role co-hosting with DuBois earlier this year, as they replaced Norah O’Donnell. However, the show has struggled in the ratings.

His departure comes as changes envelop the network, following CBS’s new owner, Skydance Media, acquiring the former parent company, Paramount, in a massive deal that was met with massive skepticism.

Colbert, who has hosted his late-night show for 10 years, slammed his parent company’s settlement with President Trump over a lawsuit regarding a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election.

Just days later, he announced that his show was being cancelled after its current season.

The merger between Paramount and Skydance, which needed approval from the Trump administration, was approved shortly after.

Since then, new owner David Ellison has appointed former New York Time journalist and head of The Free Press website, Bari Weiss as the editor-in-chief of CBS News, in a bid to boost ratings.

Paramount had acquired her Free Press site as part of a $150 million deal before selling to Ellison.

It is unclear if Maurice DuBois will host the show solo after Dickerson’s departure or not.

CBS Evening News has been struggling in the ratings compared to its competition from other networks, such as ABC’s World News Tonight and NBC’s Nightly News.

The show is watched by around 3.6 million viewers each night, a 14 percent slump from one year prior.

It is not yet clear if DuBois will continue hosting the show on his own after Dickerson’s final broadcast at the end of the year, or if he will also depart.

Weiss has reportedly been in meetings with O’Donnell in an attempt to woo her back, as well as trying to reportedly nab Bret Baier from Fox News in the future, as Baier’s under contract with Fox News until 2028.

As for other shakeups at CBS, in addition to Colbert’s firing and Dickerson’s departure, there have been rumblings that CBS Mornings could receive a massive shake-up as well–with the potential firing of Gayle King.
