David Muir somehow came out on top in late night television this week after Jimmy Kimmel’s emotional and record-breaking comeback.

The 51-year-old host of ABC World News Tonight wrapped up his 19th season on the show this week.

Over the past few months, he has been getting praised for his “outstanding” reporting and coverage of devastating events like the Texas floods and Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Although Jimmy Kimmel Live! broke its 10-year viewership record with its return, the ABC show’s monumental moment couldn’t compete with the season-long dominance David Muir achieved in television history.

The host’s new show was ranked the #1 program for 24 out of 52 weeks this season on all of TV, including all shows on broadcast and cable.

The show achieved the highest viewership in the third quarter of 2025 in all key target demos, averaging over 7 million viewers each week.

The show’s triumph also marks their 9th consecutive season as the most-watched evening newscast.

This is ABC’s biggest win over NBC in over 30 years. David’s show’s ratings overshadow Jimmy’s success on Tuesday.

Last week after ABC announced the late-night show was cancelled “indefinitely” due to his “insensitive” remarks on Charlie’s assassination, the host returned to Jimmy Kimmel Live! with his biggest audience in more than a decade.

ABC reported 6.26 million total viewers tuned in for Jimmy’s first show back since his suspension.

This was the highest viewership for a regularly scheduled episode of the program since March 2015.

It also racked up over 26 million views across social media and Youtube.

During the impactful episode, he addressed the suspension, saying, “I want to be clear about what I said and what I meant.”

He clarified, “I wasn’t making light of what happened. I was pointing out how toxic this environment has become.”

Jimmy also addressed the criticism he spewed about President Donald Trump’s reaction to the news of Charlie’s death.

“We have to speak out against this bully,” he said. “He’s not stopping.

And it’s not just comedy. He’s gunning for our journalists, too. He’s suing them, he’s bullying them.”

The president gave his take on Jimmy’s return on Truth Social.

He wrote, “I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back.

The White House was told by ABC that his Show was cancelled!

Something happened between then and now because his audience is GONE, and his ‘talent’ was never there.

“I think we’re going to test ABC out on this. Let’s see how we do.

Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars.

This one sounds even more lucrative. A true bunch of losers!

Let Jimmy Kimmel rot in his bad Ratings,” Trump concluded.
