Viewers of the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show slammed MrBeast as “cringe” for the way he helped hand out the first award of the night.
The YouTuber, real name James “Jimmy” Donaldson, attended the 2025 VMAs on Sunday, September 7 at the UBS Arena in New York. He went with his fiancée, Thea Booysen.
The first award of the night was Best New Artist, and the nominees were Alex Warren, Ella Langley, Gigi Perez, Lola Young, Sombr, and The Marías.
Before the pre-show, the category was narrowed down to three finalists: Alex Warren, Sombr, and The Marías.
The pre-show had a moment where they had MrBeast perform a stunt to deliver the iconic Moon Person for the award that involved a helicopter and a motorbike.
Many viewers were calling the stunt “cringe.” Along with being called “cringe,” there were other fans telling him to “stay away” from Sabrina Carpenter.
One user said, “This Mr. Beast delivering the trophy’s thing is so cringe.” A second person said, ” This cringe a– Mr. Beast part.”
Another said, complimenting Mr. Beast, “Mr. Beast is hot, but he’s super cringe…”

The award ended up going to Alex Warren.
The singer is well known for his hit song, Ordinary.
The song has spent 29 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit No. 1.
He received three nominations, including Best New Artist.
His track, Ordinary, was nominated for Best Pop Song and Song of the Year.
On the red carpet, when the Hype House alum was told he won the award, He seemed overcome with shock. Alex even asked co-host Nessa Diab, “This is mine?”

“My heart is…I truly did not…thank you so much.
What the?” he said to co-host Nessa Diab. ”
“This is awesome, Thank you so much. I was totally ready for Sombr to be here.”

I pooped twice today; I might go for a third.
I’m about to cry,” he continued when asked about his upcoming performance and joked about how the co-host would like him to cry for ratings.
“I don’t know; this is amazing. Thank you so much!”
This is the first time MrBeast has gone to the VMA show.
He said in a red carpet interview that he’s having a good time at the show.
“I see a lot of these people on my TikTok feeds, but a lot of these musicians I’ve never met before, and so it’s been kind of cool making friends, having a good time,” MrBeast said, per NBC News
