The Whittaker family from Odd, West Virginia, have been dubbed one of America’s most inbred families.

Previously cloaked in secrecy and notoriety, director Mark Laita’s pioneering Soft White Underbelly documentary series introduced viewers to the family who eventually welcomed outsiders – with locals allegedly mounting armed patrols to safeguard their seclusion.

However, in an unexpected development, family member Timmy Whittaker has lately been observed pursuing a thoroughly contemporary activity – working out at Planet Fitness, reports the Daily Star.

Timmy, who has an apparent foot abnormality – appearing to have been born with just seven toes, one of which is fused – accompanied YouTuber Eric Carroll, creator of the “Whittaker Family” channel, for an outing to a nearby mall before visiting the fitness center.

The mall excursion, filmed on camera, depicts Timmy thoughtfully choosing workout clothing, testing out athletic shoes and sharing laughs with Eric as he discovers the perfect pair.

After getting completely outfitted, Timmy and Eric proceeded to Planet Fitness, where the genuine excitement commenced. Timmy tackled the equipment enthusiastically, beginning with arm curls before transitioning to the pulley system, and concluding with cardiovascular work on both the running machine and the stationary bicycle.

During the workout, he was heard vocally tracking each repetition. Viewers of the footage were quick to applaud Timmy’s dedication.

“Timmy’s in his GLORY. He’s so smart. He catches on fast,” one viewer commented. Another wrote: “I can’t get over how well Timmy is doing. He understands what’s expected and follows through with everything asked of him. He smiled the whole time! Bless him.”

The family’s history has been extensively covered, though frequently dramatized. In 2020, photographer Mark Laita produced a documentary that introduced the family to the public eye for the first time in years, exposing their complicated circumstances and the struggles they endure in a remote West Virginia trailer park.

Laita, who initially met the family in 2004, described his first visit as turbulent and overwhelming. Speaking on the Koncrete KLIPS podcast, Laita remembered: “We came around to this road, which turns into a country road, which turns into a dirt road, and we come to this trailer and then a little shack on the other side of the road.

“And there’s these people walking around and their eyes are going in different directions and they are barking at us. Then one guy, you would look at him in the eye or say anything and he would just scream and go running away, and his pants would fall around his ankles, and he would go running off and kick a garbage can.

“Timmy’s in his GLORY. He’s so smart. He catches on fast.”

“And this would happen over and over. It was out of control – the craziest thing I have ever seen.”

For Timmy, the shopping and gym outing appeared to be a pure delight. Whether he’s pumping iron or pedaling on the exercise bike, he’s fully engaged in the moment.

As social media keeps its focus on the Whittakers, it’s evident that stories like Timmy’s day at the gym serve as a reminder that amidst the sensational headlines and exaggerated portrayals, there are normal moments within the turmoil.
