An aviation report revealed James’ last message to air traffic controllers

HORRIFYING new details have emerged surrounding the plane crash that left country star Brett James and his family dead.

The plane the singer was flying spiraled before smashing into a North Carolina field.

James, who wrote Carrie Underwood’s number one hit Jesus Take The Wheel, his 59-year-old girlfriend Melody Wilson, and her daughter Meryl Maxwell Wilson, 28, all died in the horror on September 18.

The plane, which took off from Nashville, Tennessee, was only a quarter of a mile from an airfield in Franklin when it crashed.

An air accident probe was launched and the subsequent report has shed light on James’ final moments.

James, 57, told an air traffic controller he could see the airport before being given the green light to change frequency, as per the National Transportation Safety Board report.

Then, he told ATC officers he was traveling at 6,800 feet and requested to perform a 360-degree turn so he could land on the runway.

ATC officials received no further requests from James.

The aircraft, a Cirrus SR22T plane, continued to plunge – dropping to around 3,300 feet.

Surveillance video captured the plane flying over the airfield before it descended into a left turn.

Then it went into a tightening spiral before hitting the ground.

Witnesses said the plane was rocking side to side and its wingtips were inverted before the collision, according to the report.

It then started to roll inverted and descended behind a tree line.

There were no signs of engine failure.

James’ stepdaughter, Meryl, had just celebrated her 28th birthday when she was killed.

She marked the occasion on social media, saying she had been 142 days sober.

“Extremely happy to be here,” she said.

And Melody marked her daughter’s birthday with a touching Instagram post.

She spoke about how she was blessed to be Meryl’s mother.

Melody described her daughter as the “most beautiful and amazing” human.

“I’m humbled and grateful every day for your shining presence in my life!” she wrote.

“No words can express what a gift you are to me and everyone that knows you.”

‘UNFATHOMABLE’ LOSS

Jesus Take The Wheel received a Grammy Award for the Best Country Song, and James wrote 26 number-one country songs during his career.

Underwood was among the stars that led the tributes.

In an Instagram post, she described his death as “unfathomable.”

“The loss of Brett James to his family, friends and our music community is too great to put into words,” she wrote.

“Brett loved the Lord. Which is the only comfort we can hold on to now. We even had the pleasure of singing together at church.

“My favorite songs to sing of ours are the ones that he or we wrote about Jesus because the thoughts and feelings behind them are so genuine and pure.

“I won’t ever sing one note of them again without thinking of him.

“Brett’s passing is leaving a hole in all of us that I fear won’t ever go away.”

Singer-songwriter Dierks Bentley described James as a “total legend.”

“Rest in peace pal. Total stud,” he wrote on social media.
