Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, has been criticized for her “childish” response to a reporter’s question about who decided that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin would meet in Budapest.

When asked, she retorted with “your mom did.”

Leavitt then went on a profanity-laden tirade when she was called out for her odd text message.

This comes after Trump, following a two-hour phone call with Putin last week, announced he will soon meet with the Russian president again.

Their previous meeting in Alaska in August failed to produce a peace deal to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Trump stated that the upcoming meeting will take place in Budapest.

The Hungarian capital is significant as it was the location of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.

In this agreement, Ukraine agreed to surrender its inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union in exchange for security assurances from the US, UK, and Russia, reports the Irish Star.

The signatories of the memorandum pledged to respect Ukraine’s existing borders and sovereignty and agreed not to use threats or military force.

However, Putin violated this promise with his 2014 invasion and annexation of Crimea and decade-long military offensive in the Donbas region, followed by a full-scale invasion in 2022.

Given the historical significance of the location, a HuffPost reporter asked Leavitt via text message last week, “Who suggested Budapest?” To which the press secretary replied: “Your mom did.”

Shortly after, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung also replied: “Your mom.” Leavitt’s response was quickly branded “childish” by critics.

But the 28 year old press secretary has since doubled down on her answer, taking to X to reveal her raging follow-up response. Leavitt shared a screenshot of the text exchange.

It showed that the reporter replied: “Is this funny to you?”.

Leavitt hit back, writing: “It’s funny to me that you actually consider yourself a journalist.

Your are a far left hack who nobody takes seriously, including your colleagues in the media, they just don’t tell you that to your face.

Stop texting me your disingenuous, biased, and bulls— questions.”

Leavitt wrote alongside the screenshots: “For context, S.V. Dáte of the Huffington Post is not a journalist interested in the facts.

He is a left-wing hack who has consistently attacked President Trump for years and constantly bombards my phone with Democrat talking points.”

She continued ranting: “Just take a look at @svdate’s feed, it reads like an anti-Trump personal diary.

Here is my full response to his ‘inquiry.’ Activists who masquerade as real reporters do a disservice to the profession.”

Critics were quick to call out her response too, accusing her of acting like a five year old and failing do her job by refusing to answer a perfectly reasonable question. “

Are you a press secretary or a 5-year-old? Seriously, you need to grow up,” one X user responded.

One person commented: “You actually posted this thinking it made you look good?

This is why record numbers of republicans are leaving the party.”

Another pointed out: “Are you not taxing the left and activists as well?

So you don’t choose when to serve or respond to people who are paying your bills. Stop acting like kindergarten kids.”

Someone else chimed in: “If you worked for a corporation, you would have been fired for this response.

You are supposed to be a liaison between the government and the media.

You’re not gaining respect by responding to people in a childish way, replying to a legitimate question with a five year-old response is so disrespectful.”

A Republican added: “Regardless of his timeline or previous interactions (and I tend to not like the HuffPo by default) this was a reasonable question asked in a reasonable manner.

And you acted like a clown. For the record, I’m a lifelong Republican saying this.”

Another agreed: “I hate to agree with this journalist, but his question is legitimate. Negotiations in Budapest?

The place where Ukraine gave up its nukes for false promises. That name doesn’t inspire trust – it screams betrayal.”

Leavitt did not answer the original question.
