NFL star Caleb Williams is facing the prospect of legal action over his new nickname.

The Chicago Bears quarterback was dubbed ‘The Iceman’ for his late-game performances in last season’s playoff run.

Detroit Lions v Chicago Bears - NFL 2025Caleb Williams has filed a trademark petition for his Iceman nickname

George Gervin

Former NBA star George Gervin – known as The Iceman during his career – has countered the claim

Williams, 24, has since moved to make the moniker his own.

The NFL star and his representatives filed four trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office related to ‘The Iceman’ nickname on March 16.

But he faces competition from an NBA legend who has been using the nickname for over 40 years.

Four-time NBA scoring champion and Hall of Famer George Gervin is making his own claim.

“I’ve been the Iceman for 40-something years,” Gervin told ESPN.

“I never thought anybody would try to trademark it. He kind of knocked me out the box.”

Gervin Interests LLC filed two trademark applications for ‘Iceman’ and ‘Iceman 44’ four days after Williams.

The San Antonio Spurs retired Gervin’s No. 44 jersey in 1987 and threw their support behind their man on Wednesday.

Posting on X, the team uploaded a snap of Gervin sitting on a throne of ice blocks with the caption, “There’s only one Iceman.”

Both Williams and Gervin must now wait for a final decision from the USPTO, which could take months.

Gervin’s publicist of 42 years told ESPN that “they will consider legal action in the future.”

Williams’ petition would see him use the Iceman nickname on “athletic sporting goods and equipment, water bottles, T-shirts, sweatshirts, jerseys, and hats.”

“I’m quite sure me and him going to get a chance to talk,” Gervin continued.

“I can kind of bet on that. We’re both men. I’m an older man. He’s a younger man.

“Me doing a little research on him, what I found out about him, he respects older athletes.

“I hate it the most because, man, he’s a special young guy getting ready to come up.

“His potential is great and he does have ice in his veins. But that name is already taken up.”
