TRAVIS Kelce is expected to finally make his decision on retirement known this week.

The legendary Kansas City Chiefs tight end has been weighing up the prospect of calling time on his NFL career for months.

The Chiefs’ season ended in heartbreak after lacklustre results and a brutal injury to Patrick Mahomes saw them miss out on the playoffs last year.

But Kelce, 36, has not announced whether he is planning to let his exemplary career end on that sour note, or if he is set to throw on the pads for one more year.

He has maintained that he is open to a return to the league, but he would need to feel as though he is physically up to the challenge before committing.

Now, however, NFL reporter Ian Rapoport has claimed that fans can expect an update on his situation this week,

While covering the NFL combine, Rapaport claimed, “This week we should have some answers from Kansas City.

“What we know is that they for sure, for sure want him back, especially considering how he played last year.

“The thing we don’t know right now is, ‘Do the Kansas City Chiefs need a new tight end?’ The future of Travis Kelce [is] still very much up in the air.

“Obviously there is plenty of discussion. This week, general manager Brett Veach of the Kansas City Chiefs said they really want to allow Travis Kelce to go through his process, to make absolutely sure that he is going to return for the 2026 season.

“As of right now, that has not been fully determined. There has been some discussion about a potential contract – obviously he would be a free agent, so he would need a contract. [He] is only going to play for the Kansas City Chiefs.

“They want to make sure that when there is a decision he is 1,000 percent sure that he is all in.”

Veach’s comments, made last week, did emphasise that the team were in open communication with Kelce and are keen to see him return for next season.

He said, “Coach [Andy Reid] mentioned on Friday he’s had great dialogue with Travis.

“I’m sure we’re going to see [his agent] here, just like we will all the other players’ agents, and we’ll continue that dialogue.

“But Travis is the best. He’s an icon. Hopefully, he comes back and we’ll just kind of let that process play out.”

It has been a busy few months for Kelce, who is planning his wedding alongside pop superstar Taylor Swift for a mystery date this summer.

But the Chiefs will need to know sooner rather than later so they can make provisions in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.

They have been tipped to chase college star Eli Stowers when he enters the draft later this year, but where and if they pick up a tight end could be entirely dependent on whether they have Kelce at their disposal.
