THE Chicago Bears could renovate their stadium with a new $5billion project.

There has been speculation that the franchise could move to Arlington Heights or Northwest Indiana.

But now there is talk of revamping Soldier Field with the help of architects Edward Peck Design.

They have put forward proposals to turn the stadium into a year-round venue.

The existing structure would remain in place with upgrades to the roof and the surrounding areas – creating an entertainment complex.

That could see a translucent dome fitted over the stands.

While there are plans to increase capacity to 72,000, including 8,700 general seating and an additional 1,800 in hospitality.

The entertainment complex, which will be built on a deck over Lake Shore Drive, will create space for restaurants, retail, hotels, apartments, and public gathering areas.

Managing director of the firm Edward Peck said: “We’re not looking to be the architect of the next Bears stadium, but everyone that you talk to in Chicago says the Bears should stay.

“They need to stay. This is the heart of Chicago.

“They’re saying that’s not possible at Soldier Field. I have an anonymous client who is a lifetime Bears fan who said, ‘I don’t believe them.’

“The concept of decking over Lake Shore Drive and the rail station has been done. Millennium Park is a result of that.

“And so it’s part of the language of Chicago now, and the future is to start to consider things like that.”
