His mum, Lacresia, told KTVE: “He was a fighter and he loved everybody.

“[Devonta] was a good kid [and would] do anything for anybody.

“He loved football, he gave his all in anything he did.

“He worked out every day, a very hard, dedicated player.

“Never gave up in football. [I will miss] my son.”

Lee played for LSU between 2019 and 2021 before transferring to Louisiana Tech.

LSU themselves wrote on social media in tribute: “The LSU Football family mourns the loss of former Tiger, Devonta Lee.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates.”

The Tech’s football account added: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Devonta Lee, a former Bulldog wide receiver.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and former teammates during this difficult time.

“He will always be remembered as a member of the Bulldog family.”

Lee was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, in 2022.

He returned to football within two years with Tech head coach Sonny Cumbie telling Fox 8 at the time: “He fights.

“He’s beaten extreme odds before, this would not surprise me one bit.

“The road is very long in terms of recovery, in terms of getting his body ready to play college football, the wear and tear and grind on his body.

“If anyone is going to be able to do it, it’s D-Lee.”

Fans and those who knew him have paid their respects online.

A journalist who met him said: “Overcome with sadness after the passing of Devonta Lee…

“[He] was an absolute shining light.”

LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker wrote: “One of the kindest yet toughest guys I’ve been around. Gone way too soon!”

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill added: “Keeping Devonta Lee’s loved ones and the @LSUfootball community in my thoughts and prayers.”
