The head of the University of Michigan had a simple and direct message for the Ann Arbor community — Sherrone Moore’s alleged actions will not be tolerated.
President Domenico Grasso penned a letter to the students and faculty on Thursday, one day after Michigan fired Moore, the head coach of the football team, after the school said it found “credible evidence” of an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
Moore — terminated for cause — was also jailed overnight Wednesday by local police on suspicion of assault, though he has not yet been charged.

Grasso wrote in his letter that the school was presented with findings of the university-led investigation on Wednesday, leading to Moore’s immediate termination.
“There is absolutely no tolerance for this conduct at the University of Michigan. None,” Grasso wrote. “This breach of trust by Coach Moore is painful for many in our community, first and foremost, the individuals directly involved in this situation. Yet our swift and decisive action reflects the University’s staunch commitment to a campus culture of respect, integrity and accountability.
“All of the facts here must be known, so the University’s investigation will continue.”
Moore, married with three children, is alleged to have had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on Thursday that Moore, in the days before his firing, was “acting strange, berating assistant coaches, not acting in a normal way.”
The report indicated that an initial investigation into Moore had cooled down toward the end of the regular season but ramped up over the past few days before his termination.
In concluding his letter, Grasso said he looks forward to the school moving past the scandal with “integrity and excellence.”

Michigan, which named Biff Poggi as the interim head coach, is slated to play in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Texas on New Year’s Eve.
