REPORTS suggest that the Minnesota Vikings are ready to move on from JJ McCarthy at quarterback.

The Vikings drafted him in 2024 but McCarthy missed his entire first season with the team after sustaining a knee injury in practice.

Vikings QBs FootballJJ McCarthy has been plagued by injuries since entering the league in 2024

When he finally made his debut in 2025, he showed flashes of what convinced the Vikings to take him with their 10th pick.

But question marks remain over his long term prospects as a franchise pillar and now, according to Tony Pauline and Essentially Sports, the Vikings are exploring their options without McCarthy.

‘Multiple league sources’ from the NFL Combine were made aware of the Vikings looking for a way to trade McCarthy, said the report.

Minnesota had been pegged to recruit a more experienced quarterback to complement McCarthy this summer anyway, but should they be able to move the 23-year-old it might be a change in tack altogether.

Kirk Cousins had been linked to the Vikings and would fit the mold of more experienced pro competing with McCarthy.

The other intriguing option in free agency is Malik Willis – the former Green Bay Packers backup – but his contract demands may mean the Vikings or any other NFL side would have to use him as a starter.

There was no postseason football for the Vikings after finishing with a 9-8 record in the NFC South.

McCarthy’s injury problems have continued to linger, too.

He had an ankle sprain in Week 2 and a concussion in Week 12, before a hairline fracture in his hand ended his season early. He managed 10 games last term and they are the only 10 of his professional career.

But of all the options, trading him would seem to be a pretty drastic move, especially given head coach Kevin O’Connell’s proven ability to mentor quarterbacks.
