Scroggins went on to file a lawsuit against the NFL in 2016, after suffering with CTE.
Following his death, Scroggins’ family released a statement to TMZ.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Tracy Scroggins,” it began.
“Tracy was a devoted father, cherished family member, and loyal friend whose life was marked by remarkable strength and perseverance.
“While many knew him for his career as a professional football player in the NFL, those closest to him knew him as a kind-hearted and generous man who cared deeply for his family and friends.”
His cause of death has not been confirmed, although Scroggins’ family suggested that his decade-long stint as a pro football star played a significant part.
The heartbreaking statement went on to add, “Playing in the NFL gave Tracy the opportunity to pursue his lifelong dream and to rise from poverty.
“However, unfortunately, the NFL was also ultimately the cause of his untimely demise.
“Tracy spent every moment of retirement courageously battling the devastating effects of CTE. While our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that he is finally at peace.”
Plenty of tributes have poured in for the beloved former NFL star.
His former team, the Lions, wrote on X, “We join the NFL community in mourning the loss of Lions Legend Tracy Scroggins, who played his entire 10-year career in Detroit (1992-2001).”
While fans also made their voices heard.
One wrote, “You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who met Tracy Scroggins that didn’t love him. Just a salt of the earth person, who was as good a teammate as he was a human. Rest Easy #97.”
While a second posted, “Damn. RIP Tracy Scroggins. One of the OG Lions I can remember as a kid.”
A third commented, “RIP Tracy. Gone way too young.”
And another added, “May his soul continue to rest in peace and paradise.”
