CAMERON ONTKO, a former professional football player who played in the CFL and briefly the NFL, has died at just 33-years-old.

The former linebacker passed away on March 7.

His mother, Brenda Boulton indicated in a social media post that a ruptured ulcer was the cause of death.

Ontko participated in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ rookie minicamp before playing three years in the Canadian Football League as he aspired to make it to the NFL

He ended up walking away from the sport in 2018 at the age of 26, citing concerns for his mental and physical health.

Tributes for Ontko have poured in on social media following the announcement of his passing.

California Polytechnic State University tweeted: “Cal Poly mourns the loss of former linebacker Cameron Ontko. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and former teammates.”

Another social media post said: “Though his life was cut short, Cameron Ontko’s memory will continue to live on through the people whose lives he touched. His commitment, loyalty, and love for the game and his community will never be forgotten.”

A second posted: “Cameron was admired for his dedication to the game of football and the passion he brought to the field. As a linebacker, he played with intensity, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility toward his teammates.”

A third wrote: “Wow. My condolences and prayers to his family. Cam was a great teammate and a great person. Love you brother!!! RIP.”

The Ohio native first played for Wisconsin at collegiate level, playing two seasons with the Badgers before transferring to Cal Poly in 2012.

In 35 games with the Mustangs, Ontko tallied 257 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss, seven pass knockdowns, two sacks, and two interceptions.

Ontko failed to get selected in the NFL Draft. Instead, he participated in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ rookie minicamp in May 2015 in an attempt to earn a spot on the roster or practice squad.

However, his attempt to make it to the NFL was unsuccessful and led to him, much like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson did once upon a time, try to build his career from Canada.

He played 29 games over three seasons in the CFL for the Calgary Stampeders (2015), BC Lions (2016) and Saskatchewan Roughriders (2017).
