Viewers of David Muir’s ABC World News Tonight were left distraught after he shared news of injuries suffered by an eight-year-old boy in a shark attack.

The child was enjoying Labor Day with his family snorkeling off the coast of Key Largo, Florida, when the incident took place.

Named as Richard Burrows, a statement from his family said that he was enjoying the trip with his 10-year-old sister and their father David, when the blacktip shark attacked.

The family thanked a good samaritan who helped guide their boat to where first responders were waiting to treat him before he was airlifted to hospital in Miami.

The incident – the latest Florida shark attack in recent weeks – occurred at around 3.24pm on Monday according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The family statement said,”Richard’s 10-year-old sister, Rose, was instrumental in her brother’s rescue and both of her parents are immensely proud of the strength of character and composure she demonstrated under pressure.”

The ‘devastating’ story prompted fans to comment

The good samaritan – named as Richard Hayden – was also thanked by the family after he heard calls for help on the radio and helped guid the boat to shore as well as helping David apply tourniquets to Richard’s right leg to help control the bleeding.

The family statement continued, “Richard is recovering well from his surgery and is gaining strength by the day.

He is in good spirits. Our hope is that he will be back enjoying his passion for the ocean and marine life with his older sister in no time.

“The Burrows family sincerely appreciate and thank everyone for their messages of support and well wishes and assistance in these past days.

We now request some privacy for the family to focus solely on Richard’s recovery and will not be commenting further.”

Fans rushed to comment on the report shared to Instagram by World News Tonight with one writing,”God bless this brave little boy, his family, and the amazing people that were around him to help good people good town and the first responders that were there.”

A second said, “Thank god he’s recovering & his leg was saved kids hurting is so devastating for me god is sooo gooodddd !!! And mericful.”

A fourth commented, “Thank god he’s recovering & his leg was saved kids hurting is so devastating for me god is sooo gooodddd !!!

And mericful. God bless everyone who helped and for the surgeons who were able to save his leg!”

A fifth offered, “If you’re snorkeling or swimming at the surface of the water it’s extremely important to not make heavy splashing noises, it’s also important not to wear brightly colored contrasting patterns or brightly colored fins, etc.

If something is sparkly or contrasting or making a lot of splashing noise at the surface, the sharks will investigate and they can’t always see exactly what they are biting to investigate.

“So this really wasn’t an “attack“ it was an investigative bite, which is bad for us, obviously, but it’s not a targeted attack..

I also know people who dive with sharks who swear by wearing wet suits only, Because it keeps their entire body one solid color as opposed to bathing suits or swim trunks that create contrast between your skin tone.”
