Patrick Mahomes is opening up about his father’s DWI arrest before the 2024 Super Bowl.
In a new episode of ESPN’s original series Chiefs Kingdom airing on Wednesday, Aug. 20, the quarterback, 29, speaks candidly about the emotional turmoil after his dad, Patrick Mahomes Sr., was arrested on a third DWI charge on Feb. 3, 2024, just a week and one day before Mahomes and the Chiefs were set to compete in the Super Bowl.
“It was during that Super Bowl. It became a story, and so, I had to answer questions about it,” Mahomes recalled.
“I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that like, you can’t keep doing the same things.”
Mahomes Sr., 55, said, “For him to have to answer questions about me was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever been through in my life.”

The former MLB player, whose son also opens up about the struggles of having a professional athlete as a parent in the episode, added, “I called him right after and I told him, I said, ‘I’m sorry that it’s taking away from your time and taking away from your focus.’ ”
Brittany Mahomes, who shares three children with the quarterback, also spoke about the arrest of her father-in-law and its toll on their family. Brittany, 29, said she thinks “it finally hit him” that his kids and grandkids “are watching” his behavior.
Mahomes Sr. admits during a confessional interview in the episode that being “considered one of the best athletes in the world” afforded him certain “privileges,” and said, “Some of them you shouldn’t take, and I took my fair share of them.”

The former pitcher said he “never really thought” alcohol was a problem for him. “It was just something that I’ve always done, just something that’s in the game. I went out, partied a little bit, wasn’t always where I was supposed to be,” he admitted.
Mahomes said he saw his father underestimating his alcohol consumption, “because he could always still be on the baseball field” before Mahomes Sr. retired in 2009.
Mahomes Sr. was arrested on Feb. 3, 2024 in Tyler, Texas after recording a blood alcohol content of 0.23 when an officer pulled him over.
The arresting officer said Mahomes Sr. had an open can of beer in the center console of his vehicle and he was taken into custody after failing his field sobriety tests, according to local news station KETK.
After submitting a guilty plea in August 2024, he served a 10-day sentence in county jail in October.
In 2018, Mahomes Sr. served 40 days in county jail following a previous DWI arrest.
