The Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach, 67-year-old Andy Reid, will enter his 27th year of coaching in the NFL when his team kicks off the NFL season September 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil. And without question, Reid has assembled one of the most successful NFL coaching careers of all time.
With three Super Bowl rings, he ties San Francisco 49ers legendary coach Bill Walsh, and the Washington Redskins’ (as they were then called) Joe Gibbs for third on the all-time list.
He will be looking this season to add to his total of 301 career regular season wins, fourth-most ever.
Reid One of Most Famous NFL Coaches
Reid also hold the distinction of being the only coach ever in the NFL to win at least 100 games with two different franchises. Before he took over in Kansas City, where he will be coaching his 13th season, he spent 14 as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
With all of his accomplishments, Reid is a magnet for publicity. So it was especially surprising on Wednesday when a local newspaper revealed that the Los Angeles, California, native has been successfully keeping a shocking incident that occurred in May of last year — and that could have caused dire, even fatal consequences for him — completely under wraps.
Until now.
Gunshot Fired Into Reid’s Office
According to reporting by Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star newspaper published Wednesday, Reid was sitting in his office at the Chiefs’ practice facility not long after midnight on May 4, 2024 when a gunshot blasted through a glass window and passed just 15 feet from where Reid was sitting at the time.
Neither Reid not any other person was injured in the shooting. But bullets also struck an area on the third floor of the facility, one story above Reid’s office, and an air conditioning unit outside the building.
Reid and the Chiefs have somehow managed to keep the frightening incident secret, even after a mass shooting on July 28 of this year at NFL headquarters on Park Avenue in New York City that killed four people.
Bulletproof Glass Now Installed
The coach now has bulletproof glass installed in his workplace, according to the Star report, a measure taken even before the NFL sent a memo in the wake of the July shooting recommending tough new security measures for all NFL teams.
The Kansas City Police Department also kept the Reid shooting incident tightly sealed, but the Star obtained what it called “a sparse incident report,” using the state of Missouri’s “Sunshine Law,” requiring the release of government and police records and documents.
“The department refused to provide further investigative or supplemental reports, citing the ongoing investigation,” according to the newspaper.
The police there are still treating the incident as an open case, and no arrests have been made or suspects publicly identified.
“The episode comes at a time in which the Chiefs have established a world-wide profile, with their games and star players increasing their international footprint.
They are the subjects of a new ESPN documentary and have recently begun to refer to themselves as ‘the world’s team,’” according to the Star report.
