Speaking to ESPN, Sanders explained that it was not a question of poor time management, but rather, accuracy.
He said: “If we hit the darn plays, we wouldn’t be asking these questions. We had the plays. We just didn’t make it happen.
“Do you call a timeout there? No, you’re right there. You don’t call a timeout there. You’ve got to go. You’re running tempo. I’ve got to do a better job.”
Sanders has entered his third season in charge of the Buffaloes.
He has had a sideline toilet installed at Folsom Field as he works through his cancer battle.
The coach needed his bladder reconstructed after a tumor was discovered this summer.
The NFL icon made a return to the sideline for the Week 1 game.
Georgia Tech took the lead with one minute and seven seconds remaining on the clock.
Quarterback Haynes King ran it in for a touchdown from 45 yards out to steal the lead.
Sanders has defended his coaching staff from criticism as former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Byron Leftwich, 45, links up with the Buffaloes.
Aaron Rodgers is closest thing to Tom Brady – but Steelers won’t make Super Bowl
A Hail Mary attempt from the 50-yard line was batted down, ending the game and handing Georgia Tech the win.The Buffaloes refused to use their two remaining timeouts as the clock ticked down.
This has prompted a wave of negativity online surrounding the Buffaloes’ clock management.
“I don’t have to babysit,” Sanders continued.
“These are some grown men getting handsomely paid. I’m pretty sure they understand what the objective is.”
This is the first time that a college team coached by Sanders has lost their season opener.
The NFL legend has stated that 17-year-old freshman quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis will make his debut in their next game.
Sanders has refused to state whether the five-star recruit will start in their next game.
“We’ve got some freshmen that could light it up,” Sanders added.”Everybody’s got guys that you want to play on special teams, but they don’t get the opportunity because everybody’s kicking the darn ball into the band.”
