Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been blessed with a relatively clean injury history so far in his NFL career – a rarity among signal callers in the league.
But this good luck and health has not eased any worries for his mother watching him on in the stands.
In a reel posted to Instagram on Saturday, Randi Mahomes opened up about the fear that she has as a parent of an injury to her son.
‘Let me tell you as a mom: to this day, it’s hard for me to watch the football games completely,’ Randi revealed.
‘I am pacing and I am playing with grandkids… I’m doing anything I can do not to just really focus on every single play because it is a fear that I have.
‘I don’t normally speak about it, but at the same time, I keep thinking it’s gonna get easier to watch

Despite his relatively clean NFL career health-wise, Randi Mahomes still fears for her son

Patrick Mahomes has been able to avoid major injuries in his eight-year NFL career

‘And we had injuries, and so, it’s something that I always tell them to like focus on your body, listen to your body, listen to your coaches and the doctors also.
‘We all know that football is a contact sport and it’s something that I’ve accepted. Every player’s team when it comes to injuries anyone on any team gets even a little bit hurt. I lose my breath for a moment and I’m praying for each and every one of them.’
Patrick hasn’t gone his entire career injury free, but the injuries he has picked up have not been major ones.
The worst injury he’s had in the NFL so far is a patella dislocation that he sustained in Week 7 of the 2019 season against the Denver Broncos.
Even then, an MRI didn’t show any major damage and Mahomes was back playing within two weeks.
He has sustained injuries in the playoffs – notably a concussion and a turf toe injury in the 2020 season that required no missed time (Mahomes did get surgery to fix his turf toe problem after losing Super Bowl LV).
Then, in 2022, Mahomes suffered an ankle sprain in the AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars which required him to miss most of the first half. Backup quarterback Chad Henne managed to keep the Chiefs in the game and Mahomes eventually returned – tossing a game-winning touchdown pass.
Prior to his pro days, Mahomes fractured a bone in the wrist of his non-throwing hand while playing quarterback at Texas Tech. Despite the injury, he continued playing the final five games of the season.
