With Week 1 in the books for the Kansas City Chiefs, the reigning conference champions dealt with both injury and insult.

Not only did Patrick Mahomes and company lose to the Los Angeles Chargers 27-21, but they also lost a big-time player in the process.

In the first quarter of Friday night’s game, wide receiver Xavier Worthy suffered a shoulder injury.

The second-year man was forced out of action, later to be downgraded from questionable to out. A mid-play collision with tight end Travis Kelce led to the speedy wideout going down in a heap on the field.

What’s the latest on Worthy in the aftermath of the game? Head coach Andy Reid provided a brief — emphasis on brief — update from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Andy Reid Comments on Xavier Worthy’s Shoulder Injury vs. Chargers

Kicking things off, Reid confirmed the shoulder injury for his young star receiver.

“As far as the injuries go, we had a couple of them,” Reid said. “Xavier Worthy hurt his shoulder early in the game.

And then [Drue] Tranquill, [Nick] Bolton and [Ashton] Gillotte, but they all finished. They should be OK as we go forward.”

He didn’t have much beyond that, however. Additional testing will reveal more details about the specifics and extent of the ailment.

“We’ll know tomorrow once we get back and do an MRI,” Reid said.

On one hand, it’s good news that none of the three other players are nursing (seemingly) significant injuries.

Tranquill’s injury, in particular, caused him to briefly leave the game. He later returned and finished things out in the fourth quarter.

The flip side of that coin is being in limbo regarding Worthy’s availability.

The former first-round pick played in every game as a rookie, so any subsequent missed time would be his first prolonged absence as a pro.

After the game, Mahomes commented on the wideout room’s performance post-Worthy injury.

“Yeah, I mean, obviously, other guys had to step up,” Mahomes said. “I thought Tyquan [Thornton] and Hollywood [Brown] and JuJu [Smith-Schuster] did a great job of kind of filling some of those roles, but that’s someone that’s a huge part of our game plan.

It’s someone we were counting on to go out there and make plays against some of the man coverage that they played.

I thought guys did a good job kind of stepping up in those roles, but you could tell it took us a little bit to get going.”

Super Bowl LIX Rematch Demands Kansas City’s Best in Week 2

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, things aren’t going to get any easier. Reid’s team has a lengthy flight back to Kansas City on the heels of a tough defeat to a division rival.

By the time they settle in, it’ll be time to prepare for perhaps the best team in all of football.

Week 2 brings a rematch of February’s Super Bowl LIX outing. The Philadelphia Eagles come to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium fresh off a thrilling season-opening win over the Dallas Cowboys.

With quarterback Jalen Hurts looking dangerous and halfback Saquon Barkley as good as ever, it’ll undoubtedly be a demanding test.

In the aforementioned big game, the Chiefs got embarrassed. A lot has changed since that 40-22 drubbing, including a new starting left tackle in Kansas City.

With that said, the effectiveness of that switch to Josh Simmons could be rendered moot if Worthy is out. Rashee Rice is already missing due to a suspension.

Steve Spagnuolo’s defense desperately needs a better showing next time around to help take pressure off the offense.

Life comes at you fast in the NFL. All it takes is one improved performance, though, to potentially right the ship.
