Dave Portnoy, one of Michigan’s most outspoken fans, reacted to the news that Sherrone Moore was fired as head football coach in several posts on social media, ultimately declaring that he was “proud” of the way his alma mater handled the situation.
Moore was let go on Wednesday after a university-led investigation found that he had engaged in an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of university policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” Michigan said in its statement announcing the firing.
Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore watches from the sideline during the second half of Michigan’s loss to Ohio State on Nov. 29, 2025 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Initially, Portnoy made jokes about the decision until reports surfaced that Moore was later detained by police in Michigan and could be facing charges. According to ESPN, Moore is now in custody at Washtenaw County jail.
The potential charges he could be facing are not yet known.
“On a serious note there have been a lot of schools over the years who have looked the other way with scandals,” Portnoy wrote on X. “I’d just like to say I’m proud that Michigan refused to do the same. Sherrone broke the moral code, and it cost him his job. It’s a hard lesson but it’s the Michigan Man Way. Leaders and best for a reason. Proud to be a Michigan Wolverine tonight.”
The Barstool Sports founder initially jumped on X to post a video after he had just jumped out of the shower and poked fun at the situation after it emerged Moore was fired for the apparent inappropriate relationship.
Barstool founder and CEO Dave Portnoy is seen before the Florida Atlantic Owls and Loyola (Il) Ramblers game in the Barstool Invitational at Wintrust Arena on Nov. 8, 2023 in Chicago.
“At Michigan if you’re going to have an affair with a staffer, you better beat Ohio state and make the playoffs. That’s the Michigan standard,” he wrote.
Things took a darker turn as the evening progressed, as it came out that police had Moore in custody.
Michigan, which is slated to face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve, will have Biff Poggi serve as the interim head coach following Moore’s firing.
