The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 23-22 in their preseason game, gaining momentum for the upcoming NFL season.
In the past few days following the matchup, the NFL decided to fine a teammate of Matthew Stafford for an on-field action.
The NFL is strict when it comes to penalizing players for unsportsmanlike conduct or excessive violence during play, especially considering that its goal is to uphold the rules of the game and protect players’ health by preventing intentional injuries.
In that sense, even though it was a preseason game, the Rams’ victory included a financial penalty for a teammate of Stafford who stood out defensively in the franchise’s hard-fought win over the Chargers.
Who was the player fined by the NFL?
The NFL decided to impose a fine on safety Tanner Ingle for $4,666 due to a hit that gave Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston a concussion last week. The information regarding the penalty was reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero on his X account (formerly Twitter).
The play occurred following a deep pass from the Chargers. As Johnston was about to catch the ball, Ingle crossed in to defend him, and in an attempt to intercept the pass, he hit his opponent, causing a hard fall. The maneuver wasn’t considered illegal, but it was excessively forceful.
What happened to Johnston?
Wide receiver Johnston remains in the concussion protocol after being injured during the Chargers’ preseason game following the hit from Ingle in the loss to the Rams.
After the play, the Los Angeles player left the field on a cart to undergo medical evaluations.
