Senior defensive tackle Zxavian Harris called Kiffin leaving at that stage in the season a “slap in the face.”
The Rebels completed a comeback win over the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl to move them into the playoff semi-finals.
But Ole Miss didn’t appreciate Kiffin keeping his name in the headlines by saying he wanted to attend the game.
Speaking to ESPN, Harris said: “He was just trying to steal our shine. That’s all he’s trying to do. That’s all he’s been trying to do, is steal our shine.
Kiffin didn’t end up going to the game Thursday. Instead, he attended the LSU women basketball’s team home loss to Kentucky.
After Kiffin’s stunning move to Baton Rouge, things have been going just fine for the Rebels depsite their former coach gutting their coaching staff.
The Rebels have gone on to destroy Tulane in the first round and then hung on to complete a comeback win over No. 3 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
They’ll next face No. 10 Miami in the semifinals in the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday and Harris insists Ole Miss is using Kiffin’s departure as motivation.
Harris said: “Like a slap and the backhand. He was trying to be a troll. We’re going to troll him. We’ve got something for him.”
His replacement, Kiffin’s former defensive coordinator Pete Golding, has led the Rebels to both of their playoff wins.
Kiffin’s departure remains a sore spot, but the jump in money was obviously too much for him to turn down.
His annual salary at Ole Miss was $9 million. LSU offered Kiffin a seven-year contract with an average annual salary of approximately $13 million with promises the football program has sufficient financial backing to pay players.
And Kiffin still has every reason to want Ole Miss to win.
