He’s a logical candidate for trade, but Jameis Winston still has value in a new-look quarterback room for the New York Giants.
Value endorsed by a key member of the front office, assistant general manager Brandon Brown.
Although he knows plenty of teams would be keen to strike a deal for a proven passer, Brown is anticipating Winston staying with the Giants.
As Brown put it, “I appreciate people that are interested, but Jameis is a New York Giant.
With the way that he’s gone about his business from Day 1, he’s made it very intentional with the fact that he wants to be here and he wants to be here for the long haul,” per the New York Post’s Jared Schwartz.
Those words represent quite the show of faith in a veteran who has appeared surplus to requirements ever since the Giants selected Jaxson Dart with the 25th pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
Dart’s positive preseason campaign has only strengthened the case for Big Blue to listen to offers for Winston.
Yet, the latter still has a key role to play this season, especially if fellow experienced signal-caller Russell Wilson struggles enough to be replaced by Dart ahead of schedule, and then doesn’t warm to being a backup.
Giants Right to Resist Any Trade Calls for Jameis Winston
Shopping Winston may look like the smart play with Dart in the ascendancy and 10-time Pro Bowler Wilson already pencilled in as the starter.
Appearances can be deceptive, though, and Wilson is far from assured to remain the Giants’ QB1 for the entire season.
The 36-year-old’s “clinging to this starting job while trying to hold off the arrival of the franchise’s future.
Wilson is an aging quarterback on his third team (Broncos, Steelers, Giants) in three seasons, and, according to those around the NFL, he’s definitely on the decline,” according to Charlotte Carroll and Mike Sando of The Athletic.
Winston has also been well travelled, but the 31-year-old was the first established thrower the Giants acquired to begin their overhaul of football’s most important position this offseason.
There was good reason Winston merited this show of faith. He’s still a strong-armed, boom-or-bust quarterback who can make big plays in an instant, something he’s already shown the Giants, with this off-platform heave to undrafted rookie Dalen Cambre against the New York Jets in preseason.
Those qualities make Winston enticing trade bait for the right team with a QB-friendly coach and system, but the Giants still need him. Albeit, more to safeguard their own plans for Dart.
Giants Need Fluid Plan for Jaxson Dart
Head coach Brian Daboll is already crafting new strategies for Dart on the field, but the Giants also need a fluid plan for the rookie away from the gridiron.
Namely, for when they ought to give the former Ole Miss star his chance to take the reins.
Dart is already performing well enough for the Giants to consider bringing his elevation date forward, but it’s not so simple.
If he’s not ready once the games are fully competitive, Daboll and Brown’s boss Joe Schoen may feel more comfortable letting Dart sit for the whole of his debut year in the pros.
The Giants will at least want to have that option, and it will be easier to exercise it if Winston is around to step in if needed.
Even if he isn’t, Winston could cool any controversy between Dart and Wilson by settling into the backup role he handled comfortably for both the Browns and New Orleans Saints.
