Shedeur Sanders finished the season with a 3-4 overall record as starter

 

 

 

 

CLEVELAND BROWNS quarterback Shedeur Sanders wasted no time looking to the future after Kevin Stefanski was fired as head coach.

Sanders, 23, has made a strong statement towards being the Browns’ starting quarterback going forward.

He finished his rookie season with a 3-4 record, 1400 passing yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

However, after the dismissal of Stefanski, Sanders will have to stake his claim once again to whoever replaces him.

He didn’t have much time to process the news before facing reporters, as he explained, “We just found out a couple seconds ago.

 

 

 

“I think it’s just overall the mentality, things are gonna happen, that’s just how the league is.

“And moving forward, just focus on what we can improve on individually for the next head coach.”

The Browns fired Stefanski after a 5-12 finish this season and six years in charge, in which he won AP NFL Coach of the Year twice.

 

 

 

He had a particularly tough task this year with the quarterback situation after they drafted two rookies, one of those being Sanders.

With Sanders’ remarkable popularity through college, his progress at the Browns was always under a microscope.

There was one stage of the year where Stefanski was accused of sabotaging Sanders in preseason.

 

 

 

Sanders reflected positively on his time with Stefanski, admitting “they grew to understand each other” this season.

He added, “We would share different things that we would both go through.

“I know he wanted this win [Week 18 win over the Bengals], and I know he wants every win, but I know that this one means a lot.”

“I wish we all played as a team, and I wish we could have done more personally within this last year.”

 

 

 

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam was non-committal over who would be starting quarterback next year.

He said, “I’m not going to get into specifics. We have a lot of work to do on the roster, particularly on the offense side.”

There is the looming question over the future of Deshaun Watson to deal with in the offseason too.
