Tensions Rise as Sean McVay Pushes Back at Reporter Over Matthew Stafford Question, Adding Drama to the Rams’ NFC Championship Narrative
The Rams were completely gutted and didn’t want to hear any questions about their futures.
After losing to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship game, 31-27, coach Sean McVay was asked whether Matthew Stafford would be the Rams quarterback next season –– and he did not appreciate the question.
“Yeah, I mean, if he still wants to play,” McVay told the reporter postgame. “What the hell kind of question is that?”
“You’ll have to ask him. We’ve been totally present. I know that if he wants to, he’s still playing at a pretty damn good clip. I mean, he’s the MVP of the league … I’ve got respect for everybody else, but this guy played at a level that’s just different.”
Sean McVay did not want to hear any questions about Matthew Stafford’s future.
Stafford, who just finished his 17th NFL season, had a contract standoff with the Rams last offseason and even flirted with the idea of joining the Giants before deciding to remain in Los Angeles, where the soon-to-be 38-year-old enjoyed a career year.
Stafford is the clear favorite to win the MVP award after throwing for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns, while the Patriots’ Drake Maye — who led the Patriots to the Super Bowl — is projected to be the runner-up in his second season.
McVay might not have wanted to hear any questions about his quarterback’s future, but Stafford did answer a few when he was asked postgame.
“I can’t generalize six months of my life ten minutes after a loss,” Stafford responded to a reporter.
Matthew Stafford may be done in the NFL.
Stafford played well on Sunday as his Rams squad fell just short against the Seahawks, as the fourth quarter went scoreless between the two teams.
The key drive of the game came when Stafford and the Rams meticulously moved the ball down the field, soaking up over seven minutes of the fourth quarter, only to be stopped on the Seahawks’ 6-yard line.
The drive was the Rams’ last real shot at scoring a touchdown to wrestle back the lead.
Stafford went 22-of-35 for 374 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday’s game, but was undone by some untimely swings, including a muffed punt by Xavier Smith.
