The Micah Parsons contract negotiation saga has gone on for essentially the entire summer – and it has certainly heated up ever since the Steelers’ TJ Watt received a three year, $123 million extension.
Parsons is next up, and is set to break the record for the both the highest paid edge rusher and the highest paid non-quarterback in league history.
Many Cowboys fans have been pulling their hair out at Jones and the rest of the organization’s inability to figure out a deal for their best player – certainly on defense.
In light of the franchise’s history at dragging their feet in critical negotiations; every Dallas fan will remember the years long Dak Prescott extension back-and-forth that ended with the former Mississippi State man getting a four year, $160 million deal back in March 2021;
both the fanbase and the team should be wary of letting the Parsons contract talks get drawn out for an extended period of time.
Jerry Jones Weighs In On The Micah Parsons Contract Situation
Now just around two weeks ahead of the start of the season, owner and general manager, Jerry Jones weighed in to the situation in his latest sit down –
this time with former Cowboys wideout, Michael Irvin. And he revealed that amidst the negative press coming down on Jones and co., Dallas has made some very generous offers to Parsons already.
In the podcast, which was released on Thursday, Jones claimed that his prior offer to the ex Penn State standout would have given him the most guaranteed money for any NFL non-quarterback.
The current record for a non-QB is held by Myles Garrett, who signed a four year, $160 million deal this offseason, and has around $123 million of it fully guaranteed.
This is certainly big news – and probably good for fans in a way, as it shows Jones is taking the negotiations seriously and is not just angling for a pre-deadline trade in the fall.
What Kind Of Offer Have The Cowboys Made Parsons?
A crucial, omitted detail from Jones is how much the team has offered Parsons. Even a free-speaker like the long-time Cowboys owner knows to avoid spilling information like that.
But stating that he has been offered the most guaranteed money is not the same as him being made the highest paid edge at his position, period.
Especially since the Cowboys tend to want to sign their key players to longer deals, on the whole. Running back, Ezekiel Elliot, famously signed a six year, $90 million deal back in 2019 after holding out – only two years of which he ended up actually playing on.
But it does seem like the overall vibe of the talks, if one is taking Jones at his word, has been that of respect from Dallas to Parsons.
“The world would know I want Micah if they knew what I offered” certainly sounds like ownership are making a push to keep their man long term – even if it is not enough for Parsons and his team around him.
