The Bills aren’t backing down.
After refusing to show up and later threatening retirement, Darius Slay was placed on the reserve/did not report list by Buffalo, who claimed the six-time Pro Bowl cornerback off waivers earlier this week, according to NFL Network.
With the move, the franchise will retain his rights, making Slay ineligible to join another team.
Slay, who was released by the Steelers earlier this week, needed some time to make a decision on his NFL future, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
Darius Slay of the Steelers looks on prior to a game against the New York Jets.
“Slay is honored that a first-class organization like the Bills claimed him, but he is going to take some time away from football right now and decide in the next few days if he wants to keep playing,” Rosenhaus told ESPN.
The NFL veteran elaborated further on “The Speakeasy” with Emmanuel Acho.
“I don’t feel like packing up and moving again,” Slay said. “I’m 13 years in, like, I done did it. [If] they would have caught me at like 28, 29, I might have been like ‘OK.’ That’s a top organization. They have a lot of great things going. They win, they go to the playoffs, they got a franchise quarterback. So, it wasn’t a bad fit. It just caught me at a bad time.”
After he floated retirement, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport posited that Slay’s “plan” may have been to end up in Philadelphia with the Eagles, who also put in a claim for him.
Before joining Pittsburgh, Slay spent the previous five seasons with the Eagles.
Slay’s wife, Jennifer, hinted at a possible reunion with the Eagles on X: “Philly….ya’ll are f–n amazing!! the love is so real.”
The Bills, who have the same record as the Eagles at 8-4, were just ahead of Philadelphia in the waiver order.
