Stafford’s back injury could throw a wrench in LA’s plans for 2025 and beyond.
The Matthew Stafford back injury has been kept under wraps better than most government secrets nowadays, but on Wednesday the NFL learned the true extent of Stafford’s injury, and it doesn’t sound pretty.
Sources: #Rams QB Matthew Stafford is dealing with an aggravated disc and has received an epidural to help him deal with it.
Los Angeles has called him week-to-week, being cautious, but with plans for him to be ready for Week 1.
Look I’m no doctor, but needing a medicine they give to pregnant women to reduce pain during childbirth seems like a pretty bad injury.
The Rams have been downplaying the extent of Stafford’s injury for the entire offseason and making it seem like everything is fine.
But remember, there is no war in Ba Sing Se (that’s an Avatar: The Last Airbender reference for those unaware).
If Stafford’s back becomes a nagging injury for Los Angeles, this could put a major hit on not only their present outlook, but the future as well.
In the short term, the Rams’ Super Bowl outlook lies on the health of Stafford’s back.
This offense is built to go a long way, especially with the addition of WR Davante Adams to the receiving core.
Even while not being the best team in the NFL against man coverage, the Rams finished tenth in the NFL in Success Rate, meaning they could be extremely efficient and convert first downs.
However, their 16th place finish in EPA per play means they could be more explosive. Well, it’s hard when your QB has a bad back to access downfield passes.
On top of that, the Rams’ backup QB is…Jimmy Garoppolo. I’m not saying they’re screwed if Stafford can’t go, but I am saying that if Rams’ HC Sean McVay can get good play out of Jimmy G he deserves a Nobel Prize.
In the long term, that Falcons’ first round pick in 2026 becomes much more important if Stafford can’t go.
He’s already toyed with retirement, but this back injury could be the final push his body gives him into retirement.
In this scenario, the Rams are set up pretty well to get their QB of the future with their own first round pick and the Falcons in 2026.
The 2026 QB class is much more promising than 2025, even without the addition of Texas QB Arch Manning, who Rams’ GM Les Snead has some ties to:
Stafford’s back injury quickly becomes the biggest story in the NFC, and if he shows any sign of discomfort, the NFC West becomes wide open.
