Johnston was tracking a pass from Justin Herbert in the first quarter when Rams ace Tanner Ingle clattered into him.
Contact was seemingly made under his helmet and the wide receiver immediately collapsed to the floor.
He displayed “fencing posture”, which is a term used when the arms are in an unnatural position after suffering a concussion.
Medics rushed over to him amid the worrying scenes.
He remained motionless on the deck for several minutes. But after checks on the field, Johnston first began to move his arms and legs.
He was then able to sit up and he walked gingerly to the cart.
Johnston remained in discomfort as he held his head while being taken to the locker room.
He was taken to hospital for further checks on Saturday evening.
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh gave an update on Johnston’s condition after the game.
He said: “Quentin suffered a concussion and that’s never a good thing.
“But the way it looked there at the time, it looked like it could have a been a lot worse.
“And he was taken (to a hospital) for more evaluation.
“He was talking. He remembered the play. He was moving good.
“So in that way, it’s a good thing.”
Johnston joined the Chargers from TCU as the No.21 overall pick in the Draft two years ago.
Last season, he registered 55 catches for 711 yards and eight touchdown catches.
The match against the Rams was the Chargers’ third of preseason.
And it was their first defeat as they were beaten 23-22.
They had beaten the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints.Harbaugh’s men face the San Francisco 49ers next weekend and then they start their NFL campaign against the Kansas City Chiefs.
