Mahomes, 30, and Kelce, 36, are being sued by a sneaker company.
This complaint centers around the name of their 1587 Prime steakhouse in Kansas City, Missouri
Sneaker company 1587 Sneakers is alleging that the name is an infringement on their trademark.
The legendary Chiefs partnership opened 1587 Prime last year.
They partnered with Noble 33 to establish the venue.
It has become a hit with members from both families being spotted regularly at the joint.
Tight end Kelce has even taken his popstar fiancée Taylor Swift, 36, to the restaurant.
The restaurant’s 1587 Prime name is a combination of Mahomes and Kelce’s respective jersey numbers.
Now the lawsuit is expected to focus on the unregistered rights claimed by the sneaker company.
1587 Sneakers started its business selling shoes in April 2023.
This gives the company first use of the number.
But it did not apply to trademark the number until October 2025.
Its application is still under review by the US Patent and Trademark Office.
A trademark for 1587 Prime was applied for by Mahomes and Kelce’s company in December 2023.
Trademark attorney Josh Gerben has explained to ESPN that the steakhouse applied for a trademark in the bar and restaurant category, while the sneaker brand applied in a clothing category.
“I think it’s a tough case for the sneaker company,” Gerben said. “Trademarks can coexist in different industries.
“Given that the marks are essentially identical here, is a restaurant and a shoe company too close? Are consumers likely to be confused in thinking they are affiliated with one another?”
