As the final whistle nears, an iconic NFL stadium bids a tearful farewell — and the emotional goodbye deepens John Allen’s lingering Super Bowl heartache

The Buffalo Bills will bid a regular-season farewell to Highmark Stadium on Sunday after 53 years.

It’s an end of an era for the Buffalo Bills.

In Week 18, they will host their final ever NFL regular season game at their iconic Highmark Stadium.

Highmark Stadium is known for its snow games as the Bills Mafia still turn up in their thousands

For 53 seasons, through sun, rain and snow, the Bills Mafia have called Highmark Stadium home.

Opening its doors for the first time in 1973, the stadium has played host to some of the NFL‘s most historic games, including the largest comeback in playoff history when the Bills rallied from a 35-3 deficit to clinch victory over the Houston Oilers in the 1992 playoffs.

In the early 1990s, the Bills hosted three AFC Championship Games, winning all three by a combined margin of 91-23.

But on all three of those occasions, and for four consecutive seasons in total, Buffalo would create unwanted history and fall at the final hurdle, losing the Super Bowl all four years.

While memorable and iconic, those throwback uniforms will be a bittersweet reminder that the Bills – beaten in two AFC title games in the last five years – are to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy, or even return to the Super Bowl since the 90s.

The Bills announced that they would be paying homage to the team’s illustrious history throughout their Week 18 contest against the New York Jets in a farewell celebration.

Expected to be a hugely emotional occasion for many, fans have already begun sharing their feelings toward the end of this era of Bills football finally arriving.

“I plan to take it all in on Sunday. The stadium I grew up in. Saw my career take off in. Won’t be a dry eye in the house,” Nate Geary, the Bills radio announcer for WGR550 posted to X (formerly Twitter).

“I plan on wearing my snow goggles so no one can see my tears,” another echoed.

“For me this stadium is always going be home, From being a season ticket member when I was in middle school with my dad Section 132. Have a lot of amazing memories,” a third fan shared.

Bills legends including Thurman Thomas (#34) and Jim Kelly (#17) are expected to be in attendance for the final game at Highmark Stadium

Spearheaded by farm boy-turned-reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen, James Cook and co will take to the field donning a red alternate helmet alongside their blue jerseys – a nod to that iconic playoff game 33 years ago.

This is the first time since the 2010 season that the Bills will wear a red helmet, whilst the players’ jerseys will be embroidered with a farewell season patch.

According to the Bills’official website, all those in attendance at the 71,608 capacity stadium will receive a Highmark Farewell Coin which “shows the Farewell Season logo, matchup and Bills logo”.

This coin will also be accompanied by an official “I Was There” card as a memento to those fans.

Fans will also receive a bespoke rally towel that is decorated like a printed ticket which will also allow fans to customize their seat, row and section location as a reminder of where they were in the final regular season game at Highmark Stadium.

Other neat additions include a special commemorative beer that has been brewed with snow that has fallen on the Stadium – which saw them having to resort back to 1990s technology earlier this season – available for purchase named ‘Blizzard Brews.’

There will also be a wide assortment of memorabilia and farewell season products available for purchase, as Buffalo legends including Jim Kelly and Thurman Thomas, – who has been involved in the construction of the new stadium – are expected to be in attendance and joined by a host of names.

Aim to go out on a high

This is likely to be the Bills’ final ever game at the stadium, with the New England Patriots having stolen the AFC East crown from Buffalo after five seasons.

Entering Week 18 against the Jets, the Bills currently occupy the seventh seed in the AFC playoff standings, meaning they will be on the road for their entire postseason run.

Construction continues on the new Buffalo Bills stadium on September 07, 2025 in Orchard Park, New York.

There is a possibility that they can move up to as high as the fifth seed, but that would require them to not only beat the Jets, but to also receive outside help, with the Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers needing to be defeated by the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos, respectively, for that to occur.

Whilst it will be sure to be an emotional occasion, their new $2.2 billion stadium – originally named ‘New Highmark Stadium’ or ‘Highmark Stadium II’ – is just metres away on the same Orchard Park site as the current one.

Before they can think about that, Allen and the Bills have work to do as they seek to officially end their tenure at Highmark Stadium by finally breaking the Super Bowl curse.

With Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs not there to obstruct their path to glory, it appears to be now or never for the Bills to attempt to finally claim that coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy and go down in franchise folklore as the first team to do so.
