The Seattle Seahawks have released veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, as reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.
He had been battling for the Seahawks’ WR3 gig behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp.
However, it looks like rookie Tory Horton may have beaten him to the job.
Valdes-Scantling joined Seattle on March 12, 2025, signing a one-year $5.5 million contract.
The 30-year-old may have failed to make the cut, but he could be retained in the practice squad, depending on other interest.MVS was initially drafted in 2018 to the Green Bay Packers, where he played for four seasons.
In 2020 he led the NFL with an impressive 20.9 yards per reception.
He then signed a three-year deal with the Chiefs, where he won back-to-back championships with Patrick Mahomes, before moving a year early to the Buffalo Bills.
He spent a few weeks in Orchard Park before joining up with the New Orleans Saints mid-way through last season.
NFL insider Aaron Wilson is reporting that MVS already has two teams courting him.
First Take star casts major doubt over Aaron Rodgers’ ability to lift Pittsburgh Steelers towards Super Bowl charge
The San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers are leading the charge. And both sides are in need of receivers.
San Fran are missing Brandon Aiyuk and Jacob Cowing with an ACL/MCL and hamstring injury respectively.
Also, Demarcus Robinson is suspended for three games and Jauan Jennings’ future is uncertain due to injury and contract reasons.
Despite the recent signing of DK Metcalf from Seattle, Pittsburgh are also looking to boost their wide out ranks.
They traded away George Pickens and just released veteran Robert Woods.
As a vested veteran, MVS can sign anywhere as a free agent, rather than going through waivers, leaving the door open for a move outside the North West.
Seattle’s first two opponents of the 2025 regular season also happen to be the 49ers and Steelers.
However, it is also possible that the Hawks will bring him back once the team’s initial 53-man roster is set.Either way, there is a high chance Valdez-Scantling will be at a Seahawks game next month.
